Does your significant other crack you up? Do you make them laugh too? A new study says that's good news for your relationship.

It's not hard to believe that a couple that laughs together, stays together, but now there's actually a scientific study to back up that claim.

Jeffrey Hall, associate professor in the department of communication studies at the University of Kansas, actually put together a meta-analysis of several studies that looked at the role of humor in relationships and concluded that couples that can laugh at their lives together, and even good-heartedly rib each other - are happier.

In general, most kinds of humor are associated with greater satisfaction in a relationship - with just a couple of caveats:

  • "aggressive" humor - which basically means making fun of someone, or worse, your partner, and
  • humor that's a substitute for healthy conflict resolution or a sincere apology.

So what does this mean for Central New York couples? Well, if you and your partner can spend an afternoon enjoying each other's company and laughing about your day together - you're probably going to be doing that together for a long time.
