Relics of CNY ~ Whites of Utica Stoneware
Take a look at this advertising jug made in Utica by White and son in this week's edition of Relics of CNY.
Don and Nancy Hartman owners of The Potting Shed Antiques in Whitesboro brought some beautiful 'Whites Utica Pottery' to the Eagle Studio. Don says this particular piece of stoneware is labeled N.A. White and Son, is from a later period in the 1860's when Noah Whites grandson assumed control after Noah's death.
The pottery jug was a piece of advertising for a liquor distributor named John Coyne on Charlotte Stree in Utica. The stoneware was made at the end of Erie Street in the area of Dunkin Donuts and the arterial. Whites Pottery was in business from the 1830's -1910 making them one of the longest running pottery companies in the United States. In 1906 they started making tile and bricks, and some can still be found in the area.
Don started collecting Whites Stoneware about 40 years ago and owned more than 175 pieces and sold it to a dealer in PA. He recently began collecting it again but is sticking with local advertising jugs.
