This week in Relics of CNY, we see hand colored photos from Frederick Hodges of Rome NY.

Don and Nancy Hartman owners of The Potting Shed Antiques in Whitesboro own an extremely rare binder full of hand colored photos created by Frederick Hodges of Rome. This priceless display was acquired by Don after the previous owner had passed away.

The Frederick Hodges collection includes about 30 pages of hand-colored photos of homes in Rome, Hinkley Lake, Delta Lake, Pixley Falls, Erie Canal Locks, and more local pictures.

Hand colored photos are also called platinotypes and are photographic prints made by a platinum process. The method allows the photo to accept color much more efficiently than any other process.
