If you are a cigarette smoker here in New York, you pay more than smokers anywhere else in the United States.  The out-of-pocket cost to smoke in this state is nearly $195,000 over the course of a lifetime.   That number comes from a report at WalletHub.com.

Here's another interesting stat from the report called "The Real Cost of Smoking by State."  When heath care and income losses are added to the price of a cigarette pack-per-day, the cost is over $2 million for someone who smokes from the ages of 18 to 69.  Not all of that is paid by the smoker, much of the cost goes to the state and insurance providers.

The American Lung Association recently criticized New York State for not enacting the "Tobacco 21" law, which would raise the legal age to buy cigarettes to 21.
