While sitting at home I noticed a visitor in my backyard tree so I decided to get a video.

It's the first woodpecker of spring.

Wait, is that a thing?

Even if it's not a 'true' sign of spring, it does mean that the birds are venturing out of their nests as this seemingly never-ending winter winds down.

NationalGeographic.com says this is a 'Pileated' woodpecker, and he or she was looking for ants and beetle larvae that make up their diet.

Woodpeckers also use their drumming or hammering on trees to attract mates and mark the boundaries of their territory.

I'm hoping that doesn't mean I'll have to listen to the hammering all summer long though.
