Thursday, March 24, an early morning fire broke out at 339 Mohawk Street in Rome. The two family residence was home to Guiseppi (Joe) and Jacqualynn Maltese downstairs, and a family of six upstairs. The dwelling is considered a total loss.

Marquise Ellis, an upstairs resident, and Joe Maltese worked together to get everyone out of the home as the fire was spreading quickly. 5 were hospitalized for smoke inhalation according to The Rome Sentinel.

A Go Fund Me page has been started for Joe and Jacqualynn Maltese as they lost all their personal possessions and had no renters insurance.

We spoke with Trisha Cable Bordage, Jacqualynn's aunt and she said:

Thursday morning at 4 am, Joe woke up smelling smoke. He went to investigate and realized the upstairs was on fire. Joe got a ladder out of the garage and got people out of the upstairs. The dwelling is considered a total loss. Very little was salvageable from the remains as water, and smoke soot has destroyed all.

We have not received any word of the upstairs resident's seeking help, and will keep you posted if that changes. We will give them the same consideration as Joe and Jacqualynn.
