Flag Day?  What is it?  Is it the same as Independence Day?  No it is not, and I think this is where some folks get a little confused.  Independence Day is July 4th, the day we celebrate our independence from England on July 4th, 1776.

Flag Day became special in the early months of the Civil War. Apparently the first celebration took place in 1861 in Connecticut. Less than two decades later, the federal government declared that all public buildings should display the flag on June 14 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the flag’s adoption (1777-1877).

That was the beginning of what is now an annual event. June 14 of each year is very popular now, though it is not an official holiday, as are July 4, Memorial Day etc, however, we as Americans can show our respect by knowing what Flag Day is about and how to display our flag properly outside our homes and businesses.
