It's February in Central New York and that means subzero temperatures. These low temps combined with the wind chill brings huge potential for frostbite and nobody wants that! The Mayo Clinic released a list of ways to prevent this horribly painful condition and it's so important for you to read and apply this advice.

The following steps are essential to remember when preparing to go out into the cold.

  1. Limit time you're outdoors in cold, wet or windy weather.
  2. Dress in several layers of loose, warm clothing.
  3. Wear a hat or headband that fully covers your ears.
  4. Wear mittens rather than gloves.
  5. Wear socks and sock liners that fit well, wick moisture and provide insulation.
  6. Watch for signs of frostbite (Early signs of frostbite include red or pale skin, prickling, and numbness).
  7. Plan to protect yourself (Be prepared for any sort of emergency i.e. being trapped in your vehicle).
  8. Don't drink alcohol if you plan to be outdoors in cold weather.
  9. Eat well-balanced meals and stay hydrated.
  10. Keep moving.
