What amazing photos of refugees right here in Utica taken by Lynne Brown. These photos are on display at the Munson Williams Proctor Williams Arts Institute until December 31, 2016. Browne and Dr. Kathryn Stam, co-curator of the exhibit, are involved with MUCC (Midtown Utica Community Center) which is an environmentally sound facility for arts, recreation, celebration, for refugees. They also work together at SUNY Polytechnic Institute’s project Refugees Starting Over.

The Portraits of Hope photos were taken at cultural events in Utica and Rome from 2012 to 2016. Browne has captured their mixed feelings of joy and heartbreak for they have left their land to seek safety and sanctuary. Since 1982, the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees has welcomed more than 15,000 people to CNY and Utica has the fourth largest concentration of refugees in the United States.
