A police officer on his way into work and 3 good Samaritans rescued two dogs trapped inside a burning home.

Syracuse Police Officer James Nowodworski noticed smoke coming from a house on Guy Road in Cicero. When he approached the home, he heard dogs barking inside. After several negative attempts to make contact with anyone inside, he entered the home, along with another man who was on the scene after seeing the smoke too.

A search of the home turned up only the two dogs that the men carried to safety while two other men helped by calling 911 and contacting the owners through the Ring doorbell, according to Syracuse.com.

Don Tinsch, a contractor for National Grid, was one of the men who helped after seeing the smoke from a site he was working on nearby. The 2 other good Samaritans are yet to be identified.

Members of the Brewerton Fire Department arrived on the scene and were able to quickly contain the fire to the garage area. No injuries to the dogs or first responders were reported.

State Police were assisted at the scene by Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office and the Cicero Police Department.
