Tyson Foods took out a full-page ad that says, "the food supply chain is breaking." Should we be concerned?

Pork, beef, and chicken plants are being forced to close across the country as workers test positive for the coronavirus. What should we do?

We asked Beth Irons from The Oneida County Public Market if CNY will run out of meat, she said, "No, people just need to know where to find it beyond the grocery store."

Even though we could be close to a meat shortage nationally, CNY will not suffer thanks to local farms and food co-ops. Just as we try to keep our favorite restaurants open, we should be doing the same for our farmers.

For those new to the idea of farm to table, The 4-Corners Food Coop has put together a Four-County Food Map that is growing every day. It's a list of farms open for your business.

We have locally produced high-quality meat available in bulk right here in CNY. Everything is available, organic, grass-fed/pasture-raised, free-range and more. Buying local food strengthens our economy and supports family farms.

Cornell Cooperative Extension has created MeatSuite, a free website to help you find a farm that fits your needs and preferences when sourcing locally raised meats.

You will learn how each farm raises their livestock and about their farming practices; allowing you to choose the meats that meet your family’s wants and needs and, ultimately, Find your Farmer.

You can also order local food and pick up in the Cornell Cooperative Extension parking lot on Saturdays. They will bring your items to the Farm and Home Center at 121 Second St. in Oriskany every Saturday now through May 9th. Pick-up from 7 am-7 pm.

No meat crisis here, just look beyond the grocery store and shop local!
