First Woman Ever Makes FBI’s 10 Most Wanted Terrorist List
Joanna Chesimard has made history, but not in a good way.
The 65-year-old Chesimard has become the first woman to appear on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist list.
Chesimard, who now goes by the name Assata Shakur, is considered a "domstic terrorist" wanted for killing a New Jersey state trooper in 1973. She’s been living in Cuba since escaping from jail in 1979.
The FBI is offering a $1 million reward for Chesimard, as is the state of New Jersey, bringing the total bounty to a hefty $2 million.
Chesimard shot Trooper Werner Foerster on a highway after she and two other men were pulled over during a traffic stop.
Chesimard was a member of the Black Liberation Army, which the FBI claims was a “radical left wing terror group that felt justified killing law enforcement officers.”
At the time of the shooting, Chesimard had been wanted for her role in several crimes, including bank robbery.
It’s not known "why the FBI is making the renewed effort to capture Chesimard."
Chesimard is also just the second domestic terrorist included on the FBI’s list and the 46th overall. The list was created in 2001.
