What a way to kick off the winter season. Erin Hamlin followed up her historic Olympic bronze medal win in Sochi last winter by winning gold at the U.S Luge World Cup. Her teammates were close behind, sweeping the medal podium for the first time in history with Emily Sweeney taking silver and Summer Britcher, bronze in Lake Placid over the weekend.

It's been a whirlwind. Maybe I'll get to sit in one spot long enough to think about it and let it sink in. It's definitely pretty surreal

Hamlin made the moment even sweeter by beating her own record time down the track. She then went on to help Team USA win its first gold medal in the relay event.

The memorable weekend hasn't quite sunk in for Hamlin yet, who's been busy preparing for the next race. "It's been a whirlwind. Maybe I'll get to sit in one spot long enough to think about it and let it sink in. It's definitely pretty surreal."

Hamlin is headed to Utah to practice for a race next weekend. Then it's off to Calgary before a short holiday break. "I get a little bit of time home for Christmas and then traveling for the rest of the season. We go back on the road December 31st. I won't be back in Lake Placid until March."

Is the historic weekend in Lake Placid a sign of things to come from Team USA this season? "We just set the bar really high. Now we have to try and keep it up there the entire season," says Hamlin.

The cherry on top of the amazing weekend was the fact the event was held in Lake Placid. "We had a huge home track crowd and everyone from home came so it was pretty awesome."

In a heartwarming show of incredible sportsmanship the other athletes honored Team USA.
