Dropbox has been struggling to get their business on track and will shut down Carousel and Mailbox. It's the result of some tough choices that had to be made.

This is a disappointment to those who use Mailbox and Carousel. It seems it just didn't become as popular as some other options available. According to a statement from Dropbox:

Building new products is about learning as much as it’s about making. It’s also about tough choices. Over the past few months, we’ve increased our team’s focus on collaboration and simplifying the way people work together. In light of that, we’ve made the difficult decision to shut down Carousel and Mailbox.

The Telegraph reports Mailbox, which Dropbox paid a reported $100 million for in 2013, generated great fanfare in its early months, becoming the app of choice for devotees of "Inbox Zero": the never-ending quest for an empty inbox. Before it had launched, the app had 800,000 people on its waiting list. However, many of its best features, such as the ability to snooze emails or swipe to get rid of them, were commandeered by Gmail's Inbox app and Microsoft's Outlook. Mailbox, meanwhile, had barely changed since Dropbox acquired it.

The company will shut down Mailbox on February 26 and Carousel on March 31.
