The Federal Trade Commission warns of fake Equifax websites popping up hoping to steal your personal information.

Equifax is paying about $700 million to settle claims of a data breach affecting 147 million people. The con artists are making fake websites that closely resemble the official Equifax settlement website as they try to steal your personal information and get a piece of that payout.

If you are trying to submit a claim, make sure you are on the real Equifax page found at ftc.gov/Equifax. You will NEVER have to pay a fee to claim benefits from the settlement. Michael Atleson, the FTC’s acting assistant director in the agency’s Division of Consumer & Business Education, tells Market Watch:

“Anyone who calls and tries to get you to file a claim is almost certainly a scammer.”

Email alerts are available from the FTC or call (833) 759-2982.
