The New York Special Olympics Winter Games are set in 2022 for Friday and Saturday, February 25th and 26th. The games will be held at various sporting venues throughout the Syracuse area and Central New York, represented by nine regions from across the state, including the Southern Tier.

According to the Special Olympics New York website, the events will include Alpine Skiing, Cross Country Skiing, Figure Skating, Floor Hockey, Snowboarding, and Snowshoeing with around 500 Special Olympics New York athletes and coaches attending and participating in the games.

This week, officials from the Special Olympics New York Winter Games held a press conference, looking for 400 volunteers to help out during the event. The press release from the conference states that you don't have to have any sports experience to become a volunteer.

Volunteers are needed to fill jobs such as set up, parking assistance, meal distribution, safety assurance, awards, athlete escorts, photography, timers, scorekeepers, and other specific venue needs. All volunteers will need to be vaccinated and registered in advance.

The venues include The OnCenter (Floor Hockey, Opening and Closing Ceremonies), Highland Forest (Cross Country Skiing), Greek Peak Ski Resort (Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding), Thornden Park (Snowshoe) and War Memorial (Figure Skating).

Special Olympics New York is the largest in the United States and one of the largest in the world with over 51,000 athletes according to the press release.
