Now that the first significant snow of the season is in the books, it's time to get the snow shovel handy. But did you know that every time you move the snow out of your driveway, you're actually putting yourself at a higher risk for a heart attack?

According to the American Heart Association, many Americans don't realize just how strenuous show shoveling can be, especially on our hearts. Gary Myers, the Director of Mission with Lifeline South Dakota, gave a couple tips on how to protect your heart during the cold winter months when shoveling is necessary.

He said it's important to take frequent breaks, avoid big meals or alcohol prior to shoveling, and use a smaller shovel to lift lighter amounts, even though it may take a little bit longer.
