It’s unfortunate that as technology advances, so do the criminals.  I’m all the time hearing about new scams over the internet, but check this one out that involves Facebook.

Someone received a Facebook friend request from a relative.  Strange though, because the person receiving the request thought they were already friends, but then assumed that maybe the relative decided to start another account for some reason.  The picture was legit, mutual friends, photos of kids, etc, so the person accepted the request.

Soon after, a message was received asking “How are you doing?”.  This was unusual, as they hadn’t heard from this relative in some time, but maybe they wanted to explain the new account.  “Fine” was the reply.

Right away, they  responded:  Okay

Hmmm…didn’t seem normal for this person to respond in this manner.  Then comes the next response…

“I am so happy I got 200,000$ in cash from the National world help companyâ ¦Did you not get it they have been helping the poor people and Retired,Unemployed, Worker's, Disable, and people's like us who are in need of money to make there possible living.”

Ahhhh, we’ve seen these emails, right?  Bad grammar, wrong spellings, these are sure signs of a scam, and now it has leaked over to Facebook.

At this point, the person decided to check the original profile, and it was up and running.  Interesting.

The person doing the scamming had copied the person’s info, stolen the profile photo, and then sent friend requests to all of their friends, many of whom had already accepted.

If you see something similar to this, the best thing to do is report it to Facebook immediately and always double check your friend requests.  Take a quick moment to verify if the account is legitimate.

Keep your friends up to date of possible hackings.

Watch for bad grammar and typos in the texts.

Have you ever been the victim of such a scam?
