Make-A-Wish Central New York does so much for critically ill children right here in our home towns. They are responsible for bringing joy to these kids who are experiencing some really difficult realities in their lives.

The pandemic has been tough on all of us: uncertainty about our health and finances, having to take extra care to stay virus-free, and even wearing surgical masks everywhere we go. It's been tough - but many of these challenges are just part of everyday life for kids with serious illnesses and their families.

That's why Make-A-Wish Central New York needs you. They just kicked off a month-long fundraising campaign on Wednesday with the goal of raising $50,000 to support the wishes of nearly 200 local children. The campaign, called Wish Heroes, will run throughout the month of April, and ties in with World Wish Day on April 29.

Make-A-Wish gives these families a chance to escape from all the worry, and to bring a magical joy to these special kids.

Wish kid Derek Holmes said Wednesday at the press tour stop in Utica that he received his wish last fall when we turned his family's pole barn into a sports complex with batting cages. It was the perfect wish for this high school pitcher with MLB dreams.

The Wish Heroes campaign celebrates the importance of wish-granting and Make-A-Wish supporters. Each Wish Hero helps make future wishes possible through personal fundraising. Now more than ever, the world needs the hope of a wish come true.
