Toys R Us is staging a comeback, and the new stores will look completely different from what you remember.

The last Toys R Us store closed in June 2018, succumbing to the pressures of a drastically changed retail landscape, unable to keep pace with online giants like Amazon. Bankruptcy shuttered every store, including those in Central New York.

Now, Toys R Us is coming back...a little. Tru Kids, who bought the bankrupt retailer, says they plan to open two new stores this year - in New Jersey, and then plan to open more in 2020. The new stores will be different than the huge store we shopped at years ago.

The new stores will be smaller - from 6,500 to 10,000 square feet - compared to the 40,000 sq. ft. of the old stores. According to a press release from b8ta, "the new Toys“R”Us shops will serve as must-visit destinations for kids to learn, play, and fall in love with the latest and most popular toys and related products."  The new stores will include "an interactive playground-like environment."

Will Toys R Us make it's way back to Central New York? We'll have to wait and see. Are you ready to be a Toys R Us kid again?
