National Weather Service (NWS) out of Binghamton has issued a Heat Advisory for all of Central New York as temperatures will feel like it's over 100 degrees today.

NWS says: Heat and humidity will both reach their peak today with heat index values well into the 90s. Thunderstorms will be possible beginning this afternoon, and especially into the evening as a cold front drops out of Canada...A fairly active period is anticipated in the very near term; first the combination of heat and humidity, and then afternoon-evening thunderstorms capable of gusty winds and very heavy downpours including possible isolated flash flooding...

* HEAT INDEX VALUES...Reaching to between 95 and 100 degrees, due to temperatures around 90, and dewpoints in the lower 70s.

* TIMING...The most oppressive combination of heat and humidity today will be during the midday and afternoon hours.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Heat Advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Absolutely do not leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle.

Take extra precautions, if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency, call 9 1 1.

Today: A slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 pm. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 88. West wind 6 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms before 2 am, then a slight chance of showers between 2 am and 3 am. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Low around 62. West wind 8 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 76. Northwest wind 9 to 13 mph.

Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 54. Northeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening
