‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Is Coming Sooner Than Expected
When Disney fired James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 over old offensive tweets that resurfaced on Twitter, and then never hired a replacement, the assumption was that if the movie still happened, it would arrive later than initially planned. By the time Disney reversed course, and brought Gunn back into the fold, he had already agreed to make the sequel/reboot to Suicide Squad for the competition first. At that point, it looked like Guardians Vol. 3 would be pushed back even further.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, that’s not true. They claim Guardians starts shooting sooner than we thought, before Suicide Squad 2 even opens in theaters in August of 2021:
And Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is planned for a 2020 shoot — the current five stars are expected to reunite — with James Gunn back in the saddle as director. Adds one source: ‘With Marvel and with Kevin, there's always a long game in play.’
If these facts are correct, that could lead to a situation where Gunn has two major superhero movies, set in two different cinematic universes, both coming out within months of one another. That would be basically unprecedented. This is like the Hollywood version of a crossover, only it’s happening behind the scenes and it’s making James Gunn obscene amounts of money.
