In times of disaster, The American Red Cross provides one of the most important things - blood.  And once again, they're looking for your help to maintain a healthy supply of this life giving substance.

Admittedly, it's been a long time since I've given blood.  I always come up with a list of excuses - I don't have time, I haven't eaten, I haven't had enough water, I'm diabetic.  That last one's a big one - can you donate blood if you're diabetic?

Diabetics who are well controlled on insulin or oral medications are eligible to donate. (American Red Cross)

What exceptions are there for diabetics?

Donors with diabetes who since 1980, ever used bovine (beef) insulin made from cattle from the United Kingdom are not eligible to donate. This requirement is related to concerns about variant CJD, or 'mad cow' disease.  (American Red Cross)

There are some other restrictions based on medication, illnesses, or disease.  The American Red Cross website has a full list to help you determine if you're eligible to donate blood.
