Remsen's Erin Hamlin will have the honor of carrying the American Flag to lead Team USA at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea.

The 31-year-old was selected to be the flag bearer by other American athletes of all sports. Appearing in a Facebook video with NBC's Mike Tirico, Hamlin said she was 'shocked', but called it an honor and privilege to be selected by all of her peers. She announced recently that the games in PyeongChang - her fourth Olylmpics - would also be her last.

Hamlin's Bronze Medal finish at the 2014 games in Sochi stands as the only single's medal earned by an American in luge.

UPDATED 2:34 p.m.- Hamlin's selection as flag bearer is not without controversy.

A tweet posted by speedskater Shani Davis said the process by which Hamlin won was executed "dishonorably" and included a reference to Black History Month -  raising the question of whether Davis, who is black, was suggesting that race played a role in the decision.

Hamlin and Davis each received four votes from each of the eight winter sports federations.

Hamlin won a coin toss, the predetermined method of picking a winner if all else failed in the athlete-led process.

USA Luge declined comment on the tweet.

Correction: NBC will carry the opening ceremonies from Pyeongchang beginning at 8:00 p.m. (eastern) Friday night. The site NBCOlympics.com will stream LIVE overage of the opening ceremonies beginning Friday morning at 6:00 a.m.
