It was nearly 20 years ago when Gene and Betty Johnson of Ilion lost their 18- year-old daughter after a car crash at Route 5 and West German Street in Herkimer.  Jennifer was on her way to class at Herkimer County Community College when her car was hit by another vehicle at the intersection.

Last week there was a very similar crash at the same Herkimer intersection.  It was fatal for 48-year-old Karen Fuller, and caused serious injury to her 21-year- old son Austin.

After hearing about the accident, the Johnsons told the Herkimer Times Telegram that they were angered by the news and that something needs to be done.  They said that after their daughter's death at the same intersection, they presented a petition to state Legislators.  It resulted in a traffic light being placed at the intersection.

Gene and Betty Johnson now hope to have the speed limit between the Herkimer Wal-Mart and the Domes, just west of that area, lowered.  They feel lower speeds could prevent further serious crashes.  If you wish to help the Johnsons with their latest petition, you can
