Utica’s Latest Food Giveaway Falls at the End of the Rainbow, The Irish Cultural Center

On St. Patrick's Day, residents of the city of Utica can participate in the latest food giveaway. This time, the "pot of gold" is at the end of the rainbow, the Irish Cultural Center on Columbia Street in Utica.

The Utica Food Pantry will hand out 1,000 boxes of food, consisting of meat, dairy and produce items. The drive-thru giveaway will start at 10 am on Wednesday, St. Patrick's Day, and carry on until all boxes are distributed. No registration is necessary.

The pantry says they hand out food on St. Patrick’s Day in memory of the Irish lost during the Great Irish Famine from 1845 to 1852.

"By holding the food distribution on St. Patrick’s Day, Utica Food Pantry is commemorating the Great Irish famine that led to the deaths of more than one million people in mid-19th century Ireland. The drive-thru food distribution is intended to raise awareness of the problem of chronic hunger and food insecurity in our community."

The food pantry will hand out 34,000 pounds of food during Wednesday’s event to help fight hunger locally. If you're someone who is in need of food, events like these will help you - and there's no need to feel ashamed needing the help. That's what events like these are for.

The Irish Cultural Center, which you may also know as Five Points Public House, is probably the best place locally to celebrate on St. Patrick's Day. Famed Irish singer and guitarist Rory Makem will perform via Facebook Live and we’ll project the concert on the big screen in the event center.
