It's like a music nerd's version of "Who's On First" -

A - "Who sings the song 'Take A Load Off, Fanny'?"

C - "The Band"

A - "Yes, who's the band?"

C - "That's right."

A - "No! Who's the band that sings 'Take A Load Off, Fanny'?"

C - "You mean 'The Weight'?  That's The Band."

A - "Who sings it?"

C - "Not the Who, THE BAND."

This is one of those songs that has become a part of popular culture.  It's been used in TV, movies, commercials, and of course tons of radio airplay over the years.  But people still have no idea what the name of the song is.  Is it "Pulled Into Nazareth" - the opening line that most people know?  Or is it the chorus of "Take a load off, Fanny"?  No it's actually "The Weight".

The Band's original lineup came together as backing musicians for rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins, so when they decided to strike out on their own, THE BAND seemed to fit.  They went through many personnel changes, but "The Weight" has remained their most popular song.  And people still don't seem to remember the name.

"The Weight Band" features Jim Weider and Randy Ciarlante who were both members of The Band.  They're joined by Brian Mitchell, Albert Rogers and Marty Grebb who have all played with former members of The Band and have been playing these songs for years.  As The Weight Band, they perform a faithful recreation of The Band's classics and maintain a pretty busy touring schedule.  They will be the featured performers at Utica's Brews And Barbecue, on May 21, 2016 at Utica's Hanna Park.
