Few sounds in rock history define decadence as perfectly as T. Rex‘s 1971 hit ‘Bang a Gong (Get it On).’ So when actor/hedonist Charlie Sheen signed on to appear in Dutch beer company Bavaria’s new commercial, it made sense for them to spring for Marc Bolan’s most famous song.

In the spot, Sheen leaves a rehab center and hops into his car, hoping to never return. As he drives through the streets of Los Angeles, everybody he sees — construction workers, a cab driver, cops on the beat — is enjoying Bavaria beer. Trying to stay clear of temptation, he heads for the safety of his home, only to find his friends raising a “Welcome Home” toast to him. He curses (remember, this is European television) and slams and locks the door behind him. A bottle of Bavaria is slipped through the doggie door as the actor looks on in fear.

But here’s the catch: Bavaria is a non-alcoholic beer. Sheen realizes this and proceeds to join the party of non-boozing partygoers in his backyard.

‘Bang a Gong (Get it On)’ recently came in at No. 81 in Ultimate Classic Rock’s countdown of the Top 100 Classic Rock Songs.
