The Stevens-Swan Humane Society will be undergoing a $500,000 renovation project to address animal welfare needs in the community.

A $373,000 grant from the State Department of Agriculture will help support the first phase of the shelter renovations.

The grant will be supported by a local donor match by Stevens-Swan board member Jackie Romano and her husband John.

Jackie Romano says improvements at the Horatio Street shelter will include doubling the size of the intake areas for the animals, remodeling the medical suite and enhancing the recovery area.

The renovations are scheduled to start in the spring of 2020.

Stevens-Swan has also announced a partnership with the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties for the establishment of a new fund that will enable SSHS to support its mission and enhance its future operations.
