Sangertown Square's Macy's appears to have avoided the ax in the latest round of closures announced by the retailer.

Central New York has lost several major retailers in the past few years as online shopping has taken a toll on brick and mortar stores. We've said goodbye to Toys R Us, Sears, KMart, Payless Shoes, and so many other smaller stores, it's hard to keep track. So when Macy's announced they are closing 30 stores in the coming months, we held our breath.

Declining Christmas sales were one factor leading to the decision to close the additional stores. In 2016, Macy's announced plans to shutter 100 stores, and has been closing them as their leases expire.

Business Insider published a list of the stores slated to shut their doors. In New York, the stores are:

  • Broadway Mall, Hicksville
  • 2 Veterans Memorial Hwy, Commack

Whew.

Like many suburban malls, Sangertown Square has had its challenges over the recent years with several retailers leaving. Sangertown has also had some victories, with the addition on anchor stores like Boscov's, Target, and Home Goods.
