Rotary Club Giving Away Free Milk Tuesday at Auburn High School

Another central New York group has hopped on the milk giveaway train, with the next pickup coming to Cayuga County.

The Auburn Rotary is holding a giveaway of 2% milk at Auburn High School Tuesday morning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., or until supplies last. The club will have enough for just over 500 cars, and they will give each car a case of 12 12-ounce bottles, according to CNYCentral.

The giveaway joins a long list of similar events across central New York from the past two months, as more out-of-work central New Yorkers rely on food banks and dairy farmers dump milk and struggle to stay afloat. SUNY Morrisville continues to host weekly drive-through milk giveaways on its campus every Friday from 4 to 6 p.m.

"We wanted to do something to help those in the community during these difficult times,” Ashley Adams Marshall, SUNY Morrisville's assistant professor of dairy science, said. “Not only does this help those in need in our community, but it also helps the struggling dairy industry since the demand on dairy products has dropped dramatically due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

At the beginning of April, Grimshaw Farms in Henderson said they had dumped 300,000 pounds of milk.

"We are being told there is too much milk on the market," Grimshaw shared on Facebook. "This is very strange when we are being told many milk shelves across the country are empty. Sure hope we can remain in business after these trying times."
