Neil Young is calling Donald Trump a music thief, and he is. Neil Young’s manager has confirmed that Donald Trump used his song Rockin’ In The Free World without his permission. Donald Trump can expect a cease and desist letter in the very near future.

This is the statement issued to 'Mother Jones' a political website:

Donald Trump's use of "Rockin' in the Free World" was not authorized. Mr. Young is a longtime supporter of Bernie Sanders (picture below).

Trump used the tune to enter both his kick-off rally at Trump Tower in New York City and his speech in Iowa later Tuesday night.
Trump's representatives told TMZ that they "paid for and obtained the legal right" to use the song.

Young's representative says:

"Donald Trump was not authorized to use 'Rockin' in the Free World' in his presidential candidacy announcement.

Neil Young, a Canadian citizen, is a supporter of Bernie Sanders for President of the United States of America."

This is not the first time a politician and rock star have been at odds. According to NBC News:

  • In 2000, Tom Petty told George W. Bush to back down from using his 1989 hit.
  • Tom Petty also didn't appreciate Michele Bachmann using another one of his songs when she was running for president in 2011.
  • Sarah Palin made her entrance at the 2008 Republican National Convention to Heart's 1977 hit. But sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson were quick to pounce when the former vice presidential candidate used it.
  • Palin's 2008 running mate, John McCain, got into his own clash with a prominent artist when John Mellencamp asked him not to use his 2007 song. (McCain's slogan at the time was, "Country First.")
