Finally, a (very large) and intrepid (read: a little crazy) group of people are going to prove what many of us already knew: aliens exist.

Like most things on the internet, you can't really pinpoint how this whole thing started, but someone had the brilliant idea to storm Area 51. If you don't know what Area 51 is, let me enlighten you: it's a highly classified Air Force facility in Nevada. If you're a UFO-ologist - it's also where the US government is keeping proof that aliens have visited Earth - including the remains of an alien ship the crashed in Roswell, NM.

The Facebook event, "Storm Area 51, They Can't Stop All of Us" currently has nearly 700,000 people "going" and another 639,000 "interested." I realize this is the United States Air Force we're talking about, but are they REALLY gonna fire on 696,000 US citizens?

You can sign up to join at their Facebook event page.

It's reached the point where even mainstream media is chiming in, asking what happens "if they all show up?"
The Washington Post even spoke to a representative from the Air Force:

Air Force spokeswoman Laura McAndrews said officials were aware of the event. When asked how authorities would respond to ardent explorers who might attempt to enter Area 51 in September, McAndrews said she could not elaborate on specific plans or security procedures at the base.

She did, however, issue a warning to those itching to try their luck.

“[Area 51] is an open training range for the U.S. Air Force, and we would discourage anyone from trying to come into the area where we train American armed forces,” McAndrews said. “The U.S. Air Force always stands ready to protect America and its assets.”

For the record, we don't recommend that you show up at Area 51, for two reasons -

  1. She sounds serious...and a little bit scary.
  2. We already know aliens exist - we don't need proof from Area 51.
