Sept. 18 is National Cheeseburger Day, and CNY is celebrating with discounts and a chance for free burgers for a year.

USA Today reports Rankers top five burgers:

  • Five Guys burger
  • In-N-Out Double-Double
  • Five Guys cheeseburger
  • Burger King Whopper

The favorite burger topping was cheddar cheese.

National Day Calendar says the beginning of the cheeseburger dates back to the 1920s.

One story suggests that Lionel Sternberger is reputed to have invented the cheeseburger in 1926 while working at his father’s Pasadena, California sandwich shop, The Rite Spot. During an experiment, he dropped a slice of American cheese on a sizzling hamburger.
