New Traffic Garden Opens in Central New York to Help Kids Learn Road Safety
Central New York families have a brand-new place where kids can safely learn the rules of the road before navigating real traffic.
The region's first-ever Traffic Garden has officially opened at Santaro Park in the Town of Onondaga. Designed as an interactive outdoor classroom, the space allows children to practice walking, biking and understanding traffic signs in a realistic, but completely safe, environment.
What Is a Traffic Garden?
Unlike a traditional playground, a Traffic Garden is built to resemble a miniature roadway.
Children will find child-sized streets, intersections, crosswalks, traffic signals and pavement markings that mirror what they see every day. The goal is to help kids develop safe habits as pedestrians and bicyclists before sharing the road with cars.

The educational space is designed for children of all ages and will also serve as a resource for schools, youth organizations and families throughout Central New York.
Why Central New York Is Building One Now
The project arrives at an important time for the region.
Onondaga County is preparing for increased traffic from major developments, including the Micron semiconductor project and the ongoing Interstate 81 transformation. At the same time, more children are riding bicycles and e-bikes, making traffic safety education more important than ever.
Organizers hope teaching these skills early will help prevent crashes and create safer communities for years to come.
What Families Can Expect
The Traffic Garden won't just be a place to ride bikes. Throughout the year, the Onondaga County Traffic Safety Advisory Board plans to host numerous events to make learning traffic safety engaging while giving families a fun reason to visit, including:
- Bicycle rodeos
- Traffic safety events
- Interactive educational activities
- Story Trail programming for younger children
Where Is the New Traffic Garden?

Officials say they hope this becomes the first of many Traffic Gardens across Central New York, creating more opportunities for children to build confidence and learn lifelong safety skills before heading onto busy roads.

The project was made possible through a partnership between the New York State Governor's Traffic Safety Committee, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, the Town of Onondaga, the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office, the Onondaga County Traffic Safety Advisory Board and numerous community organizations and local businesses.
