Another Possible Tornado Hits Central New York
Mother Nature isn't letting up this summer.
The National Weather Service in Binghamton is sending out a survey team today to check out reports of possible tornado damage near South Brookfield in Madison County.
If confirmed, this would become the 12th tornado of the 2026 season in New York, adding to what has already been an unusually busy year for severe weather across the area.
The storm survey is scheduled for this morning and could continue into the early afternoon. The team will be looking at the damage left behind by the severe thunderstorms that moved through the area on Wednesday, July 29.
Once the survey is complete, the National Weather Service is expected to release a final assessment.
New York Has Already Seen 11 Tornadoes This Year
The 2026 tornado season started early, with an EF-1 tornado touching down in Machias in Cattaraugus County on March 31.
Then on April 15, two more tornadoes were confirmed — one again in Machias and another in Farmersville. A fourth tornado hit near Hammond on April 29.
June was especially active, bringing four more tornadoes to the state. Tornadoes were confirmed in Cortland, Rock Stream, Pittsfield and Croghan.
July Brings More Severe Weather Across New York
July has continued the trend with multiple tornado reports.
An EF-1 tornado was confirmed from Sanford to Hancock on July 21, leaving a path through parts of Broome and Chenango Counties.

That same stretch of severe weather also brought two more tornado confirmations, including one near Greene in Chenango County and another tornado that traveled from Purchase to Rye in Westchester County.
Now, all eyes are on South Brookfield as weather officials investigate whether another twister touched down during Wednesday's storms.
