A Herkimer County man was taken into custody early Tuesday morning after an hours-long standoff with State Police in the Town of Russia.

42-year old Mathew Bienick was charged with menacing, harassment, unlawful imprisonment, reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a weapon.

Police were called to a home on Military Road in the Town of Russia on Sunday night just before 6:30.

When Troopers arrived, a 36-year old woman said Bienick had threatened to kill her and himself.

The victim said Bienick punched her in the nose during an argument.  She then reported another domestic incident that occurred a few weeks prior, when Bienick grabbed a rifle from a closet and put it in her mouth.

Bienick refused to speak to Troopers and barricaded himself inside his home.

That led to a nearly 30 hour standoff that ended when Bienick surrendered without incident at midnight on Tuesday.
