The Madison County Health Department says the county's first positive Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) mosquito pool has been collected at a trap site on Moore Road in the Town of Sullivan.

Officials say the type of mosquito identified is primarily a bird-biting species.

They say residents should take steps to prevent mosquito bites, including applying insect repellent and limiting outdoor activity at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

The Health Department says enhanced surveillance activities are underway.
