Kudos to the Holland Patent Firefighters who saved a deer from the ice after it was chased by coyotes.

The deer fell through ice on a pond off Coombs Road in the Town of Trenton March 12th.

When the deer was about 4 feet away we put a rope on her, got her on land and covered her with warm blankets and a tarp to combat hyperthermia. She was shaking, distressed and covered in icicles.

Members of the Holland Patent Fire Department tried using a boat to rescue the deer but it just scared it away. They were forced to cut a line in the ice with pulls and axes for the deer to swim towards shore.

Lee Wakefield, one of the rescuers says when deer started swimming towards them "we put a rope on her, got her on land and covered her with warm blankets and a tarp to combat hyperthermia. She was shaking, distressed and covered in icicles."

During the rescue responders discovered a fawn that didn't make it. But on a brighter note, Nick Stoke who was on scene during and after the rescue says a few hours later "the deer had warmed up, icicles were gone, and she scampered off into the woods."

Wakefield says it was the fire department's first deer rescue, and a little different than pulling a human or a dog from a pond. "I was just doing what I've been trained to do. I've been with Holland Patent for six years, but I have 15 years in the fire service. I have seen a lot of stuff in my years. Good and bad."

Property owner Sarah Durante thanks the firefighters who responded so quickly. "It was terrible to watch the deer struggle but nice to see it rescued safely."
