Coming up this evening, into the early morning of October 21st, look to the sky for the annual Orionid meteor shower. Here's the best times to view for New York state.

According to The Farmers Almanac, the best time to observe this meteor shower is between midnight and 5:00AM. With this meteor shower, if weather permits, expect to see 20-25 meteors per hour.

What are the Orionids? They are caused from debris from the most famous of all comets, Halley’s Comet. The comet last visited Earth in 1986 and will return next in 2061. Debris in the orbit of this comet – the Orionid meteor stream – is now encountering Earth’s atmosphere. It is called Orionids because the meteors seem to emerge or radiate from the constellation Orion."

Grab a nice blanket, a warm beverage, and get ready for the best yearly meteor shower. If weather is an issue, you can view Slooh's live broadcast of the meteor shower starting at 8PM on October 21st here.
