Ann Wilson Unveils Cover of Audioslave’s ‘I Am the Highway’
Ann Wilson has released the first taste of her upcoming covers album Immortal. The legendary Heart vocalist unleashed her version of the Audioslave song “I Am the Highway.” Wilson’s take on the Audioslave song is a country-esque and somber tribute to the late-Chris Cornell. Listen to it below.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer says, “The song is strong, confident and spiritual.” She adds, "It's about a person who refuses to be tied down to the mundane, who is constantly looking for freedom and independence on a more universal scale, not just ordinary everyday reality. It was the cry of a soul, and it's a beautiful song. Chris and I were friends; we had a lot in common, we were both outsiders in a way. He left us with amazing music."
On Immortals, which will be released on Sept. 14, Wilson honors her influences and friends who recently passed. She covers tracks from Tom Petty, Jack Bruce, Leonard Cohen, Glenn Frey, Amy Winehouse and more. The effort features special guests including Warren Haynes, who plays on Tom Petty’s “Luna” and Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me.” and Ben Mink, who performs on Leonard Cohen’s "A Thousand Kisses Deep” and Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black.” Fans can pre-order the effort here.
