Animal control rescued 30 dogs who were terrified, from an East Aurora home. Responding to a complaint of excessive barking around 2 am on Saturday at a home on Quaker Road, David Thomason, a dog patrol officer, made the discovery. According to WKBW, Thomason said,

Deplorable, below zero conditions. And the dogs were all terrified. We thought it was five dogs, turned out to be six, and they were jammed up in two little huts.

The dogs being held outside were rescued and given food and water. Then, Town of Aurora Highway Superintendent David Gunner, contacted the SPCA after hearing at least a couple of dogs barking within the home. The SPCA got a warrant to search the home, where they found 24 more dogs. The dogs were described as dirty and their fur was matted. The six dogs rescued from outside all have new homes and the other two dozen will hopefully have new homes soon.

According to a report found on the the National Center for Biotechnology Information's website, animal hoarding is an actual disorder,

An animal hoarder is defined as someone who has accumulated a large number of animals and who: 1) fails to provide minimal standards of nutrition, sanitation, and veterinary care; 2) fails to act on the deteriorating condition of the animals (including disease, starvation or death) and the environment (severe overcrowding, extremely unsanitary conditions); and often, 3) is unaware of the negative effects of the collection on their own health and well-being and on that of other family members (1). Animal hoarding has been gaining more attention from researchers in various areas of study, including sociological, psychological, and veterinary fields. Animal hoarding is considered a special manifestation of compulsive hoarding.
