It was a day that shocked the Mohawk Valley

Tomorrow marks the first anniversary of the Valley shootings which claimed the lives of four people in Herkimer and Mohawk and injured two others.

One of the heroes that emerged from the standoff with alleged gunman Kurt Myers was a German shepherd named Ape.

Ape was an FBI K9 who was the first to enter the old Glory Days Bar on Main Street where Myers was holed up.

Myers shot Ape before he was killed by law enforcement.

The dog was still alive when he was removed from the abandoned building but died on his way to a veterinarian.

Ape had only been with the FBI’s for two months.

Since the beginning of the year, ,four law enforcement K9's have been killed in the line of duty nationwide.

The bill, which was signed by Governor Cuomo, increases killing or injuring a police animal from a Class A misdemeanor to a class D felony.

The CNY Kennel Club recently donated two bullet proof vests to the Utica Police Department for the UPD's two K9 officers.
