Penn State’s Campus Ice Cream Shop Will Keep Selling ‘Peachy Paterno’ Flavor

Thanks to the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse scandal, former Penn State coach Joe Paterno’s football legacy is now largely in tatters — last weekend, the university even removed a statue honoring him.

But if there’s one place you can still find his name, it’s at the campus ice cream shop.

Berkey Creamery has sold a flavor called Peachy Paterno since it won a naming contest run by the school’s Food Science Club in 1987. And despite the recent controversy, Berkey has no plans to scrap it from its menu of 100 ice creams, saying it “honors Paterno’s work on behalf of the university’s academic side.”

But there will be one important change: previously, revenue from the sales of Peachy Paterno helped fund graduate assistant and undergraduate intern positions in the Food Science Department, but Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences said that for the next year, proceeds will instead be donated to an organization devoted to combating child sexual abuse.
