Wegmans, the Rochester-based grocery store chain that has been rapidly expanding beyond its Western New York base will be opening its first location in New York City.

According to the New York Times, a Wegmans will be built in at the former Navy Yard in Brooklyn.

The location, however, was not without controversy. The store, among other retail outlets to develop the site, will mean that several Civil War-era homes will be torn down.

In addition to their WNY home, there are Wegmans locations in Syracuse but this will be the first in Eastern or downstate NY. Although there's no Wegmans in Utica, and no prospects for one to be built, a Facebook group holds out hope to bring the grocer to the Mohawk Valley.
