Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced a new campaign to raise awareness of the state's 'Move Over' law. Part of the initiative involves NYS State Police conducting special enforcement targeting motorists who fail to slow down and move over on the Thruway.

The 'Move Over' law requires drivers to use due care, slow down and safely move over when approaching first responder vehicles, tow trucks, construction and maintenance vehicles stopped on the roadway. That law was established in 2011. In a release Governor Cuomo said,

The work performed by these first responders and workers is critical to the safety of our roadways and the motorists who use them. Every precaution must be taken to reduce the danger already inherent in these hazardous jobs and avoid preventable tragedies

The campaign will go throughout the week, and troopers and other thruway workers will be at toll booths handing out educational flyers to motorists.
