An Inside Look at a Dilapidated Upstate New York Girl Scout Camp

Nearly 30 years ago, the Girl Scouts of Rochester and Genesee Valley closed down its Camp Beechwood, however the structures of the former camp were left standing and have now become something of a spot for the curious and for thrill seekers.

Situated between Syracuse and Rochester on Lake Ontario sits Beechwood State Park. Beechwood State Park is open to the public and features trails and paths along the Lake Ontario shoreline and - an eerie and decaying Girl Scout Camp.

In 1929, the Girl Scouts founded Camp Beechwood on 150 acres of land in the northern area of the Finger Lakes and for seven decades, Camp Beechwood was a summer favorite for girls looking to enjoy the outdoors and Lake Ontario.

However, a sharp decline in attendance along with increasing taxes forced the camp to close in 1996. In 1999, New York state bought the land from the Girl Scouts and eventually added another 146 acres to it, making Beechwood State Park just under 300 acres of land to explore and camp (for free) on.

WARNING: Although Beechwood State Park and the dilapidated former Girl Scout camp are open for exploring, know that you risk bodily harm and/or prosecution for trespassing if signs are posted warning you of danger or to stay out.

While it may appear that Camp Beechwood has been abandoned and forgotten, that's not the case. The land has a caretaker who keeps a careful eye on things though discreetly placed cameras.

While very cool, the dilapidated Camp Beechwood also has a creepy, almost eerie feel to it.
