Yacht Rock – The History of Smooth Music [VIDEO]
Yacht Rock was a Channel 101 short video series and web series created by JD Ryznar 10 years ago. They only produced 12 approximately 5 minute episodes, but they are a truly hilarious look at the "smooth music" of the late 70's and early 90's. You know, yacht rock. The kinda music you would listen to on a smooth afternoon out on the lake or the ocean. Bands that we play a lot - The Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, Loggins & Messina, etc.
This is the story of Yacht Rock, told from stem to stern — a reimagining of a bygone soft-rock renaissance, courtesy of hipsters with fake mustaches, impeccable record collections and a love of smoothness. Long may it sail. (Rolling Stone)
Rolling Stone just did a great interview with the creators and actors in the series. The best part is finding out what the actual artists thought about this "fractured" history.
I met Steve Porcaro at a book-release party, and he asked, 'Do you guys hate us?' We're writing a love letter to this music and we meant no ill will toward anybody. Except for Jimmy Buffett. (Rolling Stone)
Here's the first episode of Yacht Rock:
Let's sail away on the seas of smooth music.
