I’m sure most of us have already heard (and commented on) that many retailers plan to open on Thanksgiving Day.  I have seen many people go so far as to boycott a particular store just because they will open on Thanksgiving Day.

Is this really what we are doing?  We’ve declared that it is not fair for employees to have to work on Thanksgiving?  Let’s think about this for a moment.  When employees applied for jobs in retail, they had a thorough understanding that they were likely going to have to work holidays and weekends.

Retail is competitive, that is why you are seeing more stores opening up earlier and offering up their black Friday specials…so they can beat the other guy to the punch.  If you work in retail, I strongly believe you should adjust to the schedule.  Most of the time you have enough volunteers who are quite willing to work the hours for double time pay for the holiday.

Otherwise, maybe have your Thanksgiving dinner a little earlier or later.  Adjust.  Many of us (yours truly included) have had to adjust their holiday schedule to accommodate work schedules and not always retail type jobs.

Here are a few occupations that have to work holidays and weekends.  Firemen, policemen, health care workers, military, emergency responders, and many many more, I’m sure.

So if you are a retail employee, and you are scheduled to work on a holiday, just remember that there are plenty of people who would be glad to have the job.
