West Utica Neighborhood Prepares for Arterial Project

Lifetime Cedar
Eric Meier/TSM

The project that will remake the North-South Arterial in Utica is months away from starting and years away from completion but signs of the inevitable change in the neighborhood can already been seen.

Yesterday I noticed a new sign on the building for Lifetime Cedar Products, whose Adirondack chairs and swings you see along the Arterial.  The sign indicates the building at the corner of Fay and Stevens Streets is closing at the end of the year due to the Arterial project.

Elsewhere along Fay Street (the roadway that fronts the southbound Arterial), the house pictured below at 914 Fay appears boarded up, graffiti-ed, derelict and is owned by New York State – conceivably for demolition.

The project will replace the elevated the viaduct north of Court Street, widen Court at the Arterial and other improvements.
